Working at Penryn Oaks Stables doing equine-assisted therapy with individuals & groups (2017)

Hello and Welcome! My name is Maris Loeffler. I am a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist #94277 working under the supervision of Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Sharon Skelton #46398 in Midtown Sacramento, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Amy Ellis #40536 in Roseville. I have always been passionate about the power of therapy and have found great joy in following my dream to become a helper and a listener. My passion is to join with, and walk alongside my clients in their therapeutic journeys as they create fuller, healthier, and happier lives. I recognize seeking therapy takes great strength and self-advocacy; it is an honor to be a part of the healing process for every individual that I get the chance to work with. I value always keeping an open mind and continuing to learn from every person.

I have a Master’s degree from Saint Mary’s College of California in Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy, as well as two Bachelor degrees from California Polytechnic University in Psychology and Music. My clinical experience so far includes grief and trauma counseling for all ages, equine-assisted therapy (no longer available) in an individual setting as well as groups supporting eating disorders and foster youth, and sensorimotor/somatic based treatments. I have also received training in Brainspotting Phase I, Phase 2 and Phase 3. Brainspotting is an evidence-based intervention aimed at healing traumatic experience.

For more on Brainspotting visit www.brainspotting.com, or see video linked to the left.

In addition, Saint Mary’s curriculum greatly emphasized a person-centered therapeutic approach that has shaped my style of a clinician. Person-centered work has instilled in me the importance of authenticity, genuineness, unconditional positive regard, and empathy as central to the therapeutic relationship. I truly seek to approach each case from a holistic perspective and honor the uniqueness of the individual and tailor the treatment from there.

I am currently taking children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families.

Research and Academic Papers

Master's Project

"Attachment Theory and an Equine Prison-Based Animal Program: A Case Study"

This Master's project assessed and reviewed the ongoing problem of recidivism in the prison system and the efficacy of animal-based therapeutic services. More specifically, equine (horse) based support for nonviolent offenders in an effort to build relational skills, self-worth, & marketable job skills using attachment theory as a framework.

Dual Senior Project

"Synesthesia and a Comparative Analysis of Colored Composition"

I conducted a review of the existing literature/research around synesthesia (the synthesis of two or more senses) in this cases seeing colors while hearing music to satisfy the double major senior project requirement. From a psychological perspective I summarized the current theories for the neurological explanation of synesthesia; and for music, using classical music theory analyzed pieces from synesthetic composers in the colors red, green, blue, purple and white to look for similarities and differences
